Repairing Rust

*MEDIUM*

Surface rust should be repaired soon after it forms to prevent it from spreading. Repair surface rust as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle in a shaded location outside with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual).
  2. Sand the surface rust completely from the body metal. A power tool may be necessary if the area is large. Wear safety glasses and air filter mask.
  3. Clean the surface with a damp towel to remove the dust. The surface may remain pitted.
  4. Apply metal conditioner to the repair area and wipe it off before it dries.
  5. Prepare a batch of body filler by mixing the appropriate amount of resin and hardener. Follow the instructions provided with the body repair kit. Also note how much working time is available before the filler hardens. This is usually about 3-10 minutes.
  6. Use the applicator to spread a thin coat of body filler over the prepared area. Use firm hand pressure so the surface pits are filled.
  7. Let the filler harden completely before sanding it. Wrap the sandpaper around a wooden block to achieve a flat sanded surface. Use progressively finer sandpaper until the surface is smooth.
  8. Wipe off any filler dust and apply paint primer to the surface.
  9. Allow the primer to dry. Spray paint the surface and let it dry.
